I have a speech impediment and a lisp, but I also used to stutter growing up until I was around 13 years old or so. I tell people all the time, it’s just a way to open up to people about my struggles with fluency over the years. I can understand people feeling uncomfortable about it I guess, but it’s also something that I’ve dealt with for my whole life. My little brother had a worse stutter than me, and both of my brothers also lisp. So in my family it was always pretty normal to be open about our struggles with speech and communication. When I tell someone who stutters or someone with any sort of impediment it’s always me letting them know that they are in a safe space. I’m never comparing, or trying to make it seem like I know exactly what they’ve been through because our journeys are so vastly different. I guess in my case it’s slightly different than a completely fluent person saying they used to have a stutter, as I still have a lisp and certain speech impediments, but I thought I’d provide my perspective on why I say that!
