For most people who stutter, it's a true disability. It can't be fixed, just like you can't usually make a blind man see. It's an issue we have to manage our whole lives barring some miracle cure. It's not defeatist, it's reality, and I like to live in reality. I think telling someone they can "overcome" their stutter is dangerous. It's false hope that is unlikely to come true.
