I can definitely understand. I’ve had a waitress laugh in my face while I tried getting my order out. It makes me feel really incompetent. Because I know the reason I sometimes sound this way, most others usually don’t. They just perceive some regular guy sounding silly and they react accordingly, like they would to any person, not just me or my stutter. > It’s the same thing as saying shit about someone who had Down syndrome or cracking racist jokes after you’re around someone of color. That’s the thing, even though it might feel that way to us in the moment, those two things you compared it to are much worse. Down syndrome comes along with cognitive disabilities and obvious physical features, last I checked, people who stutter don’t all look similar, and on average, the IQ of people who stutter are 13 IQ points higher than the average of those who don’t. And we’ve never been systematically discriminated against simply because we stutter like racism has to people of color. But it does hurt. A lot. To be made felt inferior over something you legitimately have no control over. I don’t hold anger or resentment to those who’ve made me feel that way. I’m sure if they knew you have stutter they wouldn’t have laughed. Just my insignificant 2 cents on your experience. Thank you for sharing and stay safe!
