American here. I was a lawyer who worked at elite firms for 10 years (my very high law school grades enabled that) and was an SVP inhouse counsel at an NYSE public company for 11. Retired at age 50. I was a good paperwork attorney who avoided face to face negotiations like the bubonic plague. Having a highly technical speciality (corporate real estate in my case) helped give me a safe harbor for my speaking deficits. Socializing was always very difficult and ultimately made the in house job intolerable - it turned out that my inhouse job was 80% ass kissing which I simply can’t do with my stutter. So I saved as much as humanely possible to get out as soon as possible, bought rentals and now live off the rents. I benefitted from a lot of luck but I also worked superhard in elite law firms. Can’t recommend my path for happiness but it did provide me financial security and the ability to raise kids in a good way. When I was 18 I thought I might starve to death because I figured “who hires a stutterer”? Way too pessimistic as it turns out but that fear was a huge motivator. I put up with anything in the big firms and they liked that, while I saved saved saved. Peasant mentality 🙃
