I'm not saying push him to talk about it. But be up front about you, your feelings, your thoughts, etc. If he's never talked to anyone about it, he could be holding a lot inside. If he opens up, it could be a lot. Or it might not be. I don't know the man. It might also be a very disfluent conversation. If so, hear him out (which I am sure you'll do, based on how I read your post.) Don't avoid the topic unless he asks you to.
