I am going to date myself, but compared to 30 years ago a lot of things are much easier now for stutterers, specifically thanks to the internet. You can now travel anywhere in the world with Google maps and navigate without having to interact with people. If you want, you can even use Google translate to hold conversations with people with whom you don’t have a common language. The fact that you can chat textually with people greatly enhances your quality of life. Virtual friendships can be extremely satisfying and for stutterers are an absolute godsend. Via chat, you can actually possess a wicked sense of humor. If you really want to, you can literally go your entire day without talking to anybody and live a pretty normal life. Before, getting on the phone was often the only means to get a lot of things done. And the phone was often the most stressful and worst possible situation. These days stuttering is no longer really an issue for me, but I clearly remember as a child always wanting to order a hamburger, but never being able to, and instead always ordering a cheeseburger. And the amount of stress that simple interaction caused me… If you haven’t already jumped on the AI bandwagon, I highly recommend ChatGPT verbal input. The speech recognition is incredibly good, and it could serve as a good way to practice speaking, too. I hardly use Google anymore.
