I'm perfectly clear on what it means. Some people are indeed trying to be helpful, maybe even most, but it just doesn't feel that way to me. I think the root of it, for me at least, is always having people judge me for having a stutter, and so I'm always on the defensive. Perhaps, in fact most likely, they're well intentioned, but to me I just can't help feeling that I'm being patronized, regardless of their intent.
