You don’t have to be in college to go to the university speech clinic. The clinic is staffed by grad students and supervised by professors. SLP grad students need to work with patients for several hundred hours before they are allowed to graduate and get licensed. (Sort of like how medical students go on rounds with doctors in the hospital before graduating.) Grad students need to work with people of all ages - from birth through elderly - and a variety of speech and language problems to be able to get their license. Anyone can go there and the cost it is usually a sliding scale based on income or health insurance. While students will be working with you, they are supervised by their professors either in person, via two way mirror, or video cameras during any treatment time. Students who work with patients who stutter are generally supervised by a professor who specializes in fluency disorders. These professors are often times people who themselves stutter.
