I hid as a transactional lawyer for 21 years - mid level stutter. I channeled my career towards reading and writing and managing deals so speaking was usually limited to functional, technical things, so ok. Socializing was brutal and I avoided it so I eliminated partnership as s possible route within a few years. I passed as fluent person, but a very shy one. Hiding in plain sight like that was not good for me - long term stress has had some me bad outcomes eventually. A stutterer I knew had a midlevel to bad stutter but he lived in the open stutterer as a city planner - lots of public meetings - I would have terrified. He worked really hard with a speech pathologist so his blocks were apparent but didn’t prevent communication. He showed a lot of courage and leadership in how he dealt with his stutter and I admire him for it.
