What helped me

What helped me I am currently 45 and have stuttered my whole life to some degree. As a child it was intense. Often i would sound like a car turning over "rrrr-rrr-rrrr". Getting pulled out of class for speech therapy only made the shame and embarrassment way worse. In the late 70s early 80s there was a show called "That's Incredible ". It was one of my favorite shows at the time and I still remember it fondly. The show mainly centered on people with unique skills or talents. One episode had a man who held the record as fastest auctioneer. When asked if he did any exercise for his amazing lightning fast speaking he told them he says "rubber baby buggy bumper" as fast as he can as many times as he can in a row. That night as I was in my bed I tried it. Over and over and over. Of course I felt I would never get to master this simple little thing but I kept at it. I still repeat this as a mantra of sorts all these years later. I believe this exercise helped me control breathing and being conscious of my speech. Now I only tend to stutter when excited or nervous but its nothing like when I was younger. Find a tongue twister with your problem sounds and keep at it!
