Thats actually a really great question, I've gone through something very similar, I think this will resonate with your situation. So yes, "over preparing" to you right now means to analyze what you need to say over and over again. But what this does, is it takes you out of flow state when you are speaking because you are speaking from remembered lines, not from your heart. As a bi product of this, you will stutter more. You are in your head and not in your body. I heard a great line from Matthew McConaughey.. he says "anything after the first take is acting". And that's what it is. If you are talking from a pre scriped mindset, you are acting, because this is your 28th take that you are just replaying. Under preparing is scary too though.. but how do you know when you feel under prepared? Feelings of not being confident, maybe unsure or uncertain. Just feelings. This leads me to what I've figured out for myself. I've had many speaking experiences on podcasts or online summits or teaching people in support groups. And every single time I was trying to remember what I wrote down that I wanted to talk about, I was in my head, stuttering and not feeling good about myself. What the different between a good speech I gave vs a bad one.. was my state. How I felt. My best speeches were off the cuff. My best speeches were when I was talking from my body not my head. This doesn't mean dont prepare.. this means prepare extra. Prepare so well that your topics are engrained into your brain. But then put yourself in a amazing state (i have a few exercises if you want to hear them). Put yourself in such a good state that you don't need to look at your notes. That whatever you say is going to be gold. Because it will be. But because of your prep, the topics will comes naturally to you because you're in a flowing state. You don't need to think about the lines, the lines will come naturally to you be default. Maybe not the exact same lines, but lines that feel more like you in that moment. The reason why Matthew McConaughey line of "anything after the 1st take is acting" stuck with me so much is because that what people who stutter do. They pre script lines in their head and that removes them from the flow of Natural speech. Causing them to "act" and not show their true selves, talk without emotion. Which of course will have the opposite effect of the intent. Hope that made sense. If I were to sum it up in a phrase you can keep in your pocket... "prepare, but you don't need to know what to say, you just have to be in the right state to say it." š
