What I believe stuttering is for a lot of us So to simplify I believe stuttering for a lot of us is the fear of half-way committing to speaking, then fear of a reaction from the listener because they are not familiar with that occurrence. For many of us, our stuttering begins as an emotional upset that causes our body to naturally disrupt our speaking. Our mind and body is uncommitted to finishing what we have to say, either as a defense mechanism socially, or due to discomfort with dealing our own emotions and feeling alive. But then some of us go on to have obsessive thoughts about getting stuck half way (A speech block) while we are speaking. So in order to leave stuttering behind, we need to do 3 things: 1. Accept and allow ourselves to feel our emotions 2. Learn to deal practically or internally with our relationship with authority figures or people we believe can bring our social status or ego down. 3. Stop engaging/reacting to obsessive thoughts and negative fantasies about half-way committing to speaking (Getting a speech block) Overall this means that we need to be more open to the idea that justifying to ourselves that protective measures to prevent stuttering are useful. And stop justifying to ourselves that stuttering in general is useful to us. So ultimately stuttering is a pattern of justifying not stuttering, but also justifying stuttering. It’s difficult for it to leave if the fight between these two forces never leaves. Let me know if you have any questions.
